Even if you don’t follow soccer (or English football), it’s likely you’ll recognize Manchester United as one of the sport’s staple teams. This season, the club reunites with the three stripes of adidas to begin a 10-year partnership. Manchester United, or “United” as its 650-plus million fans refer to them, is known for its proud history and success. Taking inspiration from the team kits of the 1980s, adidas has managed to pay homage to an iconic look while adding a modern twist.
“At adidas, we have been on a real journey in creating these new kits for Manchester United,” says Inigo Turner, adidas designer and a lifelong Manchester United fan. “This landmark sponsorship is not the first time we have partnered with the club, and it is with these iconic kits of the past that we drew our inspiration from.”
The new jerseys were worn in United’s opening victory at Old Trafford and feature a strong, v-neck collar and three stripes racing down the shoulder. Additionally, the Manchester crest featuring the iconic trident is placed on over the left chest, opposite the adidas logo, while a graphic on the hem is a subtle nod to the 1990 Manchester United squad (1990 was the debut year of club legend and now assistant coach Ryan Giggs).
“The design of the 2015/16 kit will not only appeal to our loyal supporters, it will also showcase adidas’ expertise in creating state of the art performance products for the soccer industry,” says Richard Arnold, Manchester United Group’s Managing Director.
The shirts feature the brand’s famous Climacool technology, which is made up of a 360-degree ventilation system that offers better breathability to manage sweat and help it evaporate quickly.
When the team leaves its home pitch, players will wear a crisp, clean, white version that was borrowed from the famous Busby teams of the ’60s. The Red Devils debuted the white away kits on the Premiere League’s first ever Friday night game this past week in Aston Villa.
As a part of adidas’ “Break Expectations” campaign, the kits symbolize the beginning of a new era for Manchester United as they look to return as a dominant squad in both the EPL and UEFA Champions League for the 2015-2016 season.
